Ice Melt Application Tips

Well, old Phil saw his shadow this morning, so you might find yourself applying ice melt to sidewalks and driveways. Here are some tips for application:

  • Any salt product is too caustic to spread on sidewalks with a cyclone spreader. It’s too difficult to keep the salt on the pavements and off nearby vegetation.
  • A drop spreader can be a good choice, but you’ll need one made of stainless steel, because the salt will rapidly rust out an ordinary household spreader.
  • The best bet is to hand toss the ice melt to maintain uniform coverage and keep the product where it should be.
  • Always wear eye and hand protection as well as a dust mask while distributing any granular chemical.

Follow these tips to protect your turf from damage come spring!
